Assessing Human Judgment of Computationally Generated Swarming Behavior
Computer-based swarm systems, aiming to replicate the flocking behavior of birds, were first introduced by Reynolds in 1987. In his initial work, Reynolds noted that while it was difficult to quantify the dynamics of the behavior from the model, observers of his model immediately recognized them as a representation of a natural flock. Considerable analysis has been conducted since then on quant...
متن کاملSwarming Behavior in Plant Roots
Interactions between individuals that are guided by simple rules can generate swarming behavior. Swarming behavior has been observed in many groups of organisms, including humans, and recent research has revealed that plants also demonstrate social behavior based on mutual interaction with other individuals. However, this behavior has not previously been analyzed in the context of swarming. Her...
متن کاملModeling and Simulation of Myxobacteria Swarming Behavior
We present a cell-based model to simulate the swarming behavior of various mutants of myxobacteria. Computational complexity is often known to be one of the biggest obstacles in simulating such biological system as there are too many interacting individuals involved in the system. We derive the scaling law for our model, which together with the concept of superindividuals, enable us to perform ...
متن کاملPrevalence of surface swarming behavior in Salmonella.
Swarming behavior among 167 Salmonella sp. isolates, representing all eight groups, was assessed. Only eight strains failed to swarm under standard conditions. Four of the defective strains swarmed on alternate carbon sources, and four harbored general defects in motility or lipopolysaccharide. Thus, swarming may represent an evolutionarily conserved behavior in Salmonella spp.
متن کاملComputationally Assessing Expert Judgments of Freewriting Quality
This study examines the relationship between the linguistic features of freewrites and human assessments of freewrite quality. Freewriting is a prewriting strategy that has received little experimental attention, particularly in terms of linguistic differences between high and low quality freewrites. This study builds upon the authors’ previous study, in which linguistic features of freewrites ...
